If you’re not aware – I’m officially a Christmas-holic. Yep, it’s true.
I was absolutely at Target in the Christmas section, with my four-year-old son, snagging a pre-lit tree – WHILE THEY WERE STILL SETTING UP. No lie. It was embarrassing, but not so embarrassing that it stopped me from purchasing an entire cart of Christmas goodies.
Nov 1st, we completed what I like to call “Phase 1” of our Christmas decorating in our quaint little 1960s cape cod style home. In case you’re wondering, Phase 1 involves pre-lit, fake decor, and “Phase 2” is the real stuff, we snagged post-Thanksgiving. This year, I finally convinced Chris to hang pre-lit wreaths on all of our windows. Well, maybe convinced is the wrong word. They showed up in a HUGE box from Amazon, that he couldn’t easily return. Ha! (Hey, they were a great deal – you can actually find them here.)
All of this said. After years of scouring the metro Atlanta area, for its best Christmas highs, and countless questions via my socials, I finally decided to share my faves on the blog. Yes, I realize this is not truly wedding related. But, Christmas makes me happy – so here we are! (Side note, its SCIENTIFICALLY proven that decorating early increases happiness. So why would we deny ourselves?!)
Let’s DO THIS!
1. Best Walk-Thru Christmas Lights & Top Christmas Date Night In Atlanta – Garden Lights, Holiday Nights at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens
This is actually my favorite event space + date night in Atlanta, no matter what time of year it is. If you’re not a member, you should be. The Botanical Gardens offers seasonal events throughout the year, that bring the city to life and make the perfect stop before dinner in midtown or the Virginia-Highlands.
Christmas is simply spectacular at the Atlanta Botans. Their walk-thru light display includes a 4-d light experience, while suspended in a hardwood tree canopy. They have several light shows throughout the Gardens, to music and offer fire pits and s’mores for guests of all ages. If you do have your kids with you, their extensive train display, will have your lil ones squealing for delight. All of this, and more set right in the heart of Atlanta. Such an escape from the bustle, with the only nod being a sparkling skyline backdrop.
The new Frank Lloyd Wright inspired restaurant inside the gardens is also a treat and reasonably priced for the area.
2. Best Drive-Thru Christmas Light Experience – Fantasy In Lights at Callaway Resort & Gardens
If you’d rather cruise through your light display, than brave the elements, then Callaway is the spot for you! Admittedly, it’s a haul to get to from Atlanta, but well worth the drive. And, there are accommodations on site if you’d rather spend the night. I’ve been to dozens of drive-through light shows and this is the best I’ve seen in the south. In fact, it was included in the top 10 in the world by National Geographic. What makes it so magical is that the lights and music truly engulf your car. We really enjoyed our ride through the lights and even snagged dinner at a nearby dive called Crickets, that had lots of sweet southern charm and hospitality.
3. Best Family Friendly Christmas Light Experience – Stone Mountain Christmas
Only a quick 15-minute drive from our house in Decatur, I’ve already been to Stone Mountain Christmas several times this year, with plans to return again. This is hands down my favorite experience with my son. The attractions + Christmas parade are absolute magic, with quality performers and decorations throughout the park. It’s the closest thing you’ll get to a “Disney” experience in the metro area. If you have kids and are trying to decide what to do this year, this is it. Trust me. The key, do not miss the parade + snowfall at 6pm! Y’all Santa LITERALLY FLIES THROUGH THE AIR IN A SLED this year at the 6pm performance. Just be sure to snag a spot down by the Christmas tree to see that!
The secret to a great deal at Stone Mountain is buying an annual pass. We purchase an annual pass for parking + the stone mountain all-attraction annual pass and it more than pays for itself in just a few visits. The fabulous secret is that Stone Mountain also has activities all summer long, as well as, a fall kids festival experience that we LOVED. So, it an annual pass really provides entertainment for your family all year long.
Honestly, it was hard for me to narrow down this year’s post to just lights. Maybe next year I’ll share metro Santa spots or something! ha! I really hope you’ll go see one of these shows this year and soak in all of the Christmas magic.
Merry Christmas Friends!!
